We know what we are rejecting, but what do we Want?

Occasionally, someone makes a statement that is so concise and profound that it warrants repeating—often.  Here’s one I heard recently:

If you don’t do the right thing without coercion, then coercion will be required.

(Here is a definition of coercion:  The action or practice of persuading someone to do something by using force or threats.)

The man who said it was Rev. Dr. Kenneth J. Barnes, who was being interviewed by John Anderson, former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia.

    It is worth watching!

The conversation was about business ethics, among other subjects, though the statement about coercion applies to all of life.  But what human being consistently does the right thing, especially as a child, without coercion?  There is no doubt that I required a lot of coercion as a child and well into my teen years!  Usually, the fear of unwanted consequences puts some limits on our otherwise rampant selfishness.

Our human capacity to make choices is bent towards selfishness from the moment we arrive into this world, and it is the unenvious responsibility of parents to introduce enough coercion, or consequences, into the lives of children to bend them towards right choices and selflessness.  Every parent will know that this often feels like a constant and thankless task.

    Legalistic Compliance

Even in early years, we discover that we can sometimes obey the exact commands we have been given, but still act out of selfishness.  We can be technically right in our efforts to evade consequences, but wrong in heart.

As we grow older this ability becomes more sophisticated.  To illustrate, I live in a town where under-age drinking has been a problem for years.  Some of the pubs have a reputation for allowing young people to order drinks without proof of age, so it is not unusual for parents to order their teenagers to avoid those pubs.  More than one of the pubs has a “beer garden”.  So, a young man comes home about midnight, smelling of alcohol and his dad, who has waited up for his late appearance, asks the obvious question, “Have you been to the….pub?”, to which the teenager replies, “No!” His answer might be technically correct because he stayed in the beer garden, but he is still attempting to mislead his father.  Within his own definitions, the young man has complied with his dad’s order, but he has violated the intent.

Dr. Kenneth Barnes, in his interview with John Anderson points out that few business schools at Universities teach ethics.  They used to, but now they teach compliance.  The idea underlying this shift in education will destroy the freedom and wealth that the economic system of Western nations has provided.  Many businesses no longer ask the question, “What is the right thing to do?”.  Rather, they hire clever lawyers to look for every loophole in the law in their search for more dominance in the market and more profit.

    Ethics are Essential

Our system only works well, however, if free individuals act ethically.  They must often ask themselves the question, “What is the right thing to do here?”

As commitment to ethical behaviour declines in our free nations, our system is nearing collapse.  Many young people are intensely aware of the rampant self-interests of many big businesses and are demanding that the capitalist system should be dismantled.  Is it the system that is wrong, or is it the individuals in it?

As I write, the Black Lives Matter movement is dominating headlines.  I looked at the placards being carried by some of the protestors and they were large photos of Malcolm X and one of his more famous quotes: “You can’t have capitalism without racism”.  What are they saying?

    What Do We Want?

They want a fair distribution of wealth.  But how could that happen?  The only approach being suggested now is for “the people” to own all the businesses.  That means government.  Does any government anywhere in modern history consistently run businesses well?  Our governments in Western nations are already extremely powerful, especially since they are the only authorities who have the right to use coercion, even deadly force.  Do the protestors and their mentors really want to give government more coercive power?

Lord Acton is the person credited with first saying, “Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely”.   Thoroughgoing socialism has been implemented many times in the last 100 years but to implement it, the socialist party in charge must take absolute power to itself.  In every case, the record of human rights violations speaks for itself.  Loss of freedoms comes first, then progressive poverty.

Some people would say that China is completely different.  And that is true, in terms of economic development.  But the story is the same when human rights violations are considered.  Has the Chinese Communist Party succeeded in their objective of a more equal society?  Not at all.  The part is full of super-rich families, but hundreds of millions still live in poverty and oppression.

The peaceful protesters in the streets of our cities and the violent mobs are all part of the same powerful statement of dissatisfaction with the status quo.  But what do they/we want?  Do we intend to destabilise our democracy and the regulated free market and replace it with a government that is empowered to seize wealth from businesses and private individuals and then redistribute it?  Do we really think that the concentration of power will turn out well?

    A Glimmer of Hope

There is another hope—though it seems small at the moment.  At the most basic level, this is not a systemic problem, it is the collective result of the loss of ethical behaviour by individuals.  Changing the system won’t help, it will make things much worse.

Let’s shift our focus from changing the system to reforming the system.  We want to keep the system that has brought more wealth and liberty to more people than anything in history.  But it must be reformed, or perhaps it is better to say redeemed.  That is usually a slow process because it consists of countless individuals experiencing a change of values and behaviour. But that is the only way forward.

Government can’t change the values of individuals.  It can affect their behaviour with the threat of coercion, but we don’t want more of that!  Values are shaped in families, clubs, schools and, most of all, religious influence.  But not just any religion.

Over 500 years ago a monk named Martin Luther “rediscovered God and changed the world”, as Eric Metaxas writes in his biography of Luther.  The forms of government and economics that grew from the Reformation proved to be the most desirable the world has ever known.  The flow of immigration over the past 200 years bears unarguable witness to that.

    Christian, You Must Engage!

Our struggling, hurting world can be redeemed.  It was the Biblical faith that first gave rise to the acknowledgment that all people are created equal.  It is time to proclaim it again.  It is time for Biblical Christians everywhere to re-examine the beauty and desirability of the truth they hold.  It’s time for business schools to teach ethics again, not just compliance.  It’s time for schools to extol the values of ethics and morality as taught and illustrated in the Bible.

If you are a Christian, BE BOLD!  Be kind.  Be generous.  Be compassionate.  Be honest.  Be transparent.  But, with all that, stand up and speak for what is right and expose what is wrong!

There is a way forward, but we must all decide to engage.

**This is a personal website and reflects my thoughts and convictions. It does not represent any official position held by Youth With A Mission.**

For a few years, I flew in and out of Norther Nigeria via its largest city, Kano.  There were several aspects of those flights that were nerve-wracking; today they make for good stories.

My most anxious moments were at the immigration point in the departures area.  The set up was similar to many others except that the officers were not behind glass; they were behind plywood sheets where the glass should have been, so no one could be seen.  The departing passenger would push their passport through a small slot in the plywood and then move about 5 steps farther along, where they would wait for their passport to appear again through another small slot.

With shrugs of apology, local passengers would explain that my passport was more likely to emerge again if it has a $20 note in it. I, however, was an anti-corruption warrior who refused to be intimidated into bribery!  I would stand at the second small slot, waiting while other passengers came and went; then, eventually, my passport would reappear, and I would feel I struck another small blow against systemic corruption.

    What’s the Real Root?

Decades have passed, and now each of my four adult children have been or are involved with Africa. Two of them have lived in African countries and the other two have made many more trips than I ever did.  They have had to interface with corrupt officials at much higher levels than I ever did—and the amounts involved are exponentially greater.

There is no doubt that corruption is the primary cause of poverty in Africa.  The continent has been blessed with the greatest natural resource riches of any part of the world, but the general rule is, “the closer you live to valuable natural resources the more misery you will experience”.  A few officials and their families amass colossal wealth and the many lack clean water, good nutrition, education or any kind of health care. But how often do we consider that the dishonesty of the average person is the root cause of corruption?

Government officials, including the police, military, immigration—the every-day faces of power—rely upon the government treasury for their pay.  The treasury is dependent upon the citizens to declare their income and pay their taxes. When the treasury cannot pay government workers, they usually use the power of their position to extort money directly from the populace.  Hence, the nerve-wracking passport slots in Kano.

    Anti-Corruption Campaigns Don’t Work

When a new government replaces an old one in the many nations suffering from corruption, they will inevitably announce an anti-corruption campaign. Of course, that suggests that the new government is not corrupt, but that is impossible.  When almost every citizen conceals their income and pays no taxes; when there is no system in place to track income and reliably collect taxes, only the corrupt can navigate their way to the top.  Maybe, occasionally, an independently wealthy person can commit to serving their nation and can do so without resorting to corruption—but that is exceedingly rare.

    No Quick Fix

So, good luck to all the anti-corruption drives, whether mounted by the United Nations, or the foreign aid departments of Western governments, or by the big NGOs.  If the Treasury does not have the revenue to pay government workers a fair wage, then corruption cannot be stopped.  The high-profile campaigns continue, despite the inescapable logic I have laid out.  Why?

I think the answer is simple.  The governments and large organisations know of no way to address the root problem of dishonesty in the citizenry.

    Which Nations Are Least Corrupt?

But there are many prosperous nations in which the taxation system works and government workers are paid, often very well.  So, we must look at their history and ask how that working system arose.  There are essentially two reasons—totalitarian control is one and voluntarily honest citizens is the other.  Since no one would choose to be under a tyrannical government, we should examine the second reason.

Have a look at the “Corruption Perceptions Index”: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corruption_Perceptions_Index)

Did you notice anything those nations have in common?

    The Importance of Biblical Christianity

They were the primary nations impacted by The Reformation (except for Japan, but that’s another story).  They were the nations where the general populace became literate and very familiar with the Bible.  Those were all Northern European nations and they went on to establish similar societies in North America, Australia and New Zealand.  The Counter-Reformation prevented the Southern European countries from accessing the Bible until relatively recent times, but now that two or three Popes in succession have promoted Bible literacy, that might change.

It wasn’t just the original Reformation.  Following Luther’s “revolution” these nations experienced Christian awakenings or revivals—waves of evangelism, Bible studies and character transformation in ordinary citizens.  Character transformation of citizens formed a solid foundation for honesty throughout society.  (For a very readable account of how religious awakening contributed to the American Constitution, have a look at If You Can Keep It, by Eric Metaxas.)

There is no doubt that the transformation of any nation is an enormous, complex and long-term process.  Grinding poverty alongside fabulous wealth was the norm for Europe 150 years ago, but revival and Biblical teaching brought gradual change.  Over generations, the fundamental needs of human life were more and more accessible to all.  I propose that this is the only desirable path for the transformations of nations where corruption is the current norm.

    It Has Begun!

If that sounds like an impossible process, think again.  I have just returned from Brazil where an event called The Send, drew about 150,000 people, average age 24, who were super-energetic for 12 hours of worship and challenge to become missionaries. I was at the largest of the three full stadia at 10 p.m. and the energy levels, commitment and focus were still going strong after 12 hours of standing through sun and rain and dark.

I referred to The Send in an email to a friend earlier today and she replied with her own wonderful report:

“I leave tomorrow with For His Glory ministries to do a large festival in Kisangani in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; we expect to have a festival where 75,000 to 100,000 maybe even more people accept Christ Over 5 nights. We’ve trained over 10,000 people already in that city to disciple new believers.”

It seems to me that the waves of revival, or awakening, are happening already—and on a very large scale.  May they continue and grow!

    Christlike Living

Now we need countless Christians who will initiate Bible studies with a focus on developing Christ-like character.  Then, with a foundation of honest citizens, proportionate revenue can be raised, and government employees paid.  THEN we have a hope of stamping out corruption.

After these many decades of experience in deeply corrupt nations, I have more sympathy with corrupt officials.  Having said that, often their corruption is boundless, so I am far from condoning or defending them, but I do understand that it is not just a result of individual wickedness.

I am still committed to waging war on corruption, but we must address the foundational issue—the essential importance of an honest population.  That can only be realised by deep conversion experiences with the Holy Spirit and then character formation by powerful Bible teaching and learning.  If that sounds like it’s too big to hope for, note that it only takes about 20% of the population to catalyse change.  That minority percentage is enough to act as “salt and light”, as Jesus referred to.  Surely that brings reformation into our thinking as a very real possibility.

Let’s join the biggest and most successful campaign ever against corruption.  Preach the Good News about the power of the Holy Spirit to transform individuals, then teach (and live) Christlike character and we will see nations transformed!

**This is a personal website and reflects my thoughts and convictions. It does not represent any official position held by Youth With A Mission.**

The Send, in São Paulo and Brasilia, was unlike any event we have seen.  I was at two of the stadiums (or stadia, to be correct).  First, São Paulo Stadium and then Alliance Arena stadium, about 15 kilometres away.  Those two venues hosted well over 100,00 young people who came to hear more about how they could be missionaries.  They stayed the full 12 hours, and the excitement was greater at the end than at any time during the day!  They fully engaged with every worship set and listened intently to the missions speakers.  I was astounded!

Throughout the day, I reflected on the question, “What is God doing here in Brazil?”  The total global force of missionaries is something in excess of 400,000, but the Brazilians I spoke to are believing for 1% of the evangelical population to go into missionary work.  That would be 800,000 and would treble the number of missionaries in the world!

    A high-profile conversion?

All that was very exciting and encouraging, but something else grabbed the headlines in the Brazilian newspapers.  Their President took the stage in Brasilia to declare that he is a Christian!  When that happened in Brasilia, the social media networks buzzed and it was the only time during the 12-hour day, that the crowd temporarily seemed distracted.  They celebrated in little groups; they prayed for President Jair Messias Bolsonaro and the rumours ran through the stadium in visible ripples.

I wasn’t sure what, exactly, had happened; so, I contacted a friend who was on stage in Brasilia and he reported that the President did take to the stage and stated that he is a Christian.  Within seconds, it was reported that he had given his life to Jesus at The Send. One person who was there said it was an incredible moment and that it seemed it shifted the atmosphere over Brazil.  He also wondered, “Will it stay that way?”

That is a good question!  What can we expect now?  We know his wife has consistently identified herself as a Christian, but who is President Jair Messias Bolsonaro?  The mainstream press in Europe and the USA have depicted him as a dangerous, reactionary, right-wing opportunist. But that’s the way they often describe any politician who is on the conservative side of politics.  So how do we know who he is and how do we know if this proclamation is sincere?

    We don’t.

    It’s hard to not judge

We do know that Jesus warned us not to judge because we cannot know another person’s heart.  Most of the media will assume that he was just seeking votes.  Maybe he was, but we don’t have any way of knowing.  All we have is a commandment not to judge and the Biblical assurance that “by their fruits you will know them.”

There will be vitriolic attacks against him by journalists who are “sure” that he is a hypocritical opportunist.  Christians will be tempted to rush to his defence and align with this man who has publicly confessed that he is following Jesus.  But, is he?

After consultation, The Send wanted this statement to be released:

The president is a Catholic Christian and his wife is a born-again Christian. He has professed Christ as his Saviour previously and he stated it again at The Send.  He is hungry for God although he can be controversial at times. His appearance was not planned. It was a surprise and when we knew he would show up, we were advised by some fathers in the church of Brazil to at least allow him to greet the people. He kept his greeting short, non-political and was visibly touched by the prayers and the presence of God in that place. The immediate press reports were positive and the feedback from the Church leaders has also been positive.

    Wisdom

If we choose the path of wisdom, we will not rush to his defence, nor will we join the many who have already condemned him.  We should take the wise path, praying for him and being careful about expressing opinions one way or the other, especially in public forums.

Some people who are born again experience an immediate reorientation of their entire life, including significant transformation of their character.  Others come to a genuine faith, but the transformation of their character, their values and their choices is a process that takes time.  Still others are like the rocky soil Jesus spoke about:  they respond to the gospel, but when tests come, they abandon their faith.  If President Bolsanaro takes paths that suggest that he has not changed, let us not desert him at the first mistake.  He might yet turn out to be a force for godly transformation in Brazil.

Nor should we support him, whatever he does, just because he publicly confessed that he is a Christian.  It is entirely possible that he was vote seeking at The Send. Let us not be impulsive one way or the other.

    Time will tell.

  • Should We be doing Business with China?

Should We be doing Business with China?

**This is a personal website and reflects my thoughts and convictions. It does not represent any official position held by Youth With A Mission.**

If you have been reading this blog for a while, you will know how much I love and respect the Chinese people.  The Christians of China are great role models for what it means to be a follower of Jesus and I gladly acknowledge that they have a leadership role in the global Body of Christ.

The Chinese government is another matter.  It seems to me that the Western, developed countries, in their/our pursuit of economic growth, have tried to pretend that this ruthless, inhuman regime is somehow not so bad and will move in the right direction if we are nice to them.

A VOICE WE SHOULD HEAR AND SUPPORT

David Alton, (Lord Alton of Liverpool) is one voice that will not yield to the willful blindness of our governments.  He has consistently unmasked the viciousness of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in his speeches to the House of Lords in London and in the many other venues where he has a voice.

Do pray for him; remember that the CCP does not hesitate to take action against opposition.

    HONG KONG

He has recently reminded us that the conflict in Hong Kong has not gone away, even though it does not feature as often in our news reports as it did a couple of months ago.  In fact, it has worsened as the weeks have passed and Hong Kong is almost unrecognizable when compared to what it was earlier this year.

Here is an excellent report of what is happening as the Chinese Government becomes more and more determined to silence those who are giving their all to protect the freedoms they have had until now.

    https://davidalton.net/2019/11/13/hong-kong-universities-turned-into-a-war-zone-can-you-hear-the-people-sing-will-you-come-and-stand-with-me/

    21ST CENTURY GENOCIDE

Lord Alton and another committed Christian Member of Parliament, Fiona Bruce, have also courageously unmasked the inhumane treatment of religious minorities in China.  These include the “Falun Gong sect, Uyghur Muslims, Tibetan Buddhists and, possibly, Christian dissidents along with other prisoners of conscience.”

Over the past few days, I have been in touch with a YWAMer who has provided first-hand documentation to David Alton and Fiona Bruce and he has confirmed that at least 1.5 million people are in “re-education camps” (more accurately known as concentration camps), mostly in Western China.  The list of tortures they use on prisoners is very difficult to comprehend.  An unknown, but large, number of prisoners who are “not cooperative” have been subjected to the removal of all their usable organs for transplants.  Fiona Bruce referred to it as an “almost perfect crime” because “no one survives”.

Here is the link to that information:

    https://davidalton.net/2019/02/25/questions-on-the-muslim-uighurs-february-25th-ministers-questioned-in-the-house-of-lords-about-tortured-lawyers-demolished-christian-churches-abducted-pastor-organ-harvesting-and-incarceration-of/

I cannot, with any confidence, suggest a course of action at this point, but I can urge you to pray.  As more of us pray, we might be given a divine action plan.  But we must start with an awareness of these in horrific   acts by the CCP.
